Bolzano - Bozen

The city's

The city of Bolzano stands in a fertile and harmonious plain, where the rivers Talvera and Adige come together, and in a protected and sunny position.
This is the chief town of South Tyrol.

Bolzano

Vineyards and orchards surround the old economic and trade center. It is also a coveted tourist center thank to its beautiful view: the impressive massif of the Dolomites at east, the Sarentie Alps with the so called valley up north, the Mendola’s ridge at south and the peaks of the Ega valley at the southern part.

The historical center is full of interesting monuments. The heart of Bolzano is Walther Square, which gets its name from the poet Walther von der Vogelweide. Near the square, at its southern side, stands the city’s symbol: the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, which represents a treasure among the Gothic constructions in South Tyrol.

The main street which passes through the historical center is the Arcades Street (via dei Portici). At both of its sides we can admire beautiful old three-floor houses that used to belong to the nobles.
At the western side of the Walther Square lays the Dominican convent, which hosts today the academy of music.

The famous walk along the Talvera stands by the western side of the river’s bank. Here, in the middle of an expanse of vineyards, we can find the Mareccio Castle.
In the heart of Bolzano there is also a beautiful marketplace (Mercato delle Erbe). It is located at the beginning of the Arcades Street (via dei Portici), in a semicircular square full of gaily-coloured vegetables and fruits stalls. In the middle of the market stands the Fountain of the Three Dolphins (Fontana dei tre Delfini) with the statue of Neptune, a great example of baroque sculpture.

The city of Gries has become part of Bolzano. It is a characteristic district located by the bank of the river Talvera. The northern part of this quarter hosts the sunny hills of the Gucina mountain, covered by many vineyard that are famous for the production of a great local wine.
Furthermore, along these wonderful vines, stands a beautiful walk.
Another impressive walk is the S. Osvaldo’s, that starts around the S. Antonio Castle and goes on toward the Sarentina valley.
On the outskirts of this walk, grow the grapes of one of the most remarkable local wines, the Santa Maddalena.
